The Ice Hockey Program at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County was founded in 1988. It was established on the principles of quality education, leadership development, and competitive hockey. Since its inception, the program has carried out its mission by successfully graduating community leaders and assisting in the continued skill development of its players. During our tenure in the Mason-Dixon Hockey League, UMBC competed in ten consecutive postseasons, seven semifinals, and four championships. In 1999, UMBC joined the Mid-Atlantic Conference Hockey Association, one of the premier ACHA leagues in the United States. UMBC chose the New Jersey based league for its competitive reputation and tradition of sending teams to the ACHA National Championship. Coupled with our tough non-conference schedule against ACHA ranked competition, UMBC is banking on an ACHA National Championship berth in the near future. The coaching staff is always looking for talented players to join our program who can make an immediate impact. Generally, UMBC recruits players from the Junior A, Junior B, Prep, Midget, and HS ranks. Players contacted, scouted and recruited through this process will be offered a tender assuring them a spot on the UMBC starting roster. Additionally, all UMBC students, walk-ons, or non-recruited players are welcome to join the team. Today, our mission to provide the highest quality education for our players continues as we continue to build a top ACHA team. As such, several goals have been developed to allow this vision to come to fruition. These goals include building a strong recruiting program, providing a qualified coaching staff, and competing in the ACHA Nationals. |
