Team Mission

UMBC Ice Hockey was established in 1988, providing student-athletes the opportunity to continue competing at the collegiate level.  Our values include Academic Commitment, Community Involvement, and Excellence in Athletics.  Since its inception, our program has focused on developing well-rounded student athletes who are prepared for post-collegiate life.  In addition to their athletic commitment, our players are expected to maintain a quality GPA and are required to participate in community service activities.  We believe these traits best prepare our student-athletes whether they decided to continue their education in graduate studies or directly enter the workforce.

We feel the Annual Alumni Game personifies our commitment to player development.  UMBC Hockey Alumni with PhD's and Master's Degrees, medical professionals, business owners and entrepreneurs, financial advisors, real estate agents, researchers and law enforcement personnel fill our alumni bench.

Recruitment Process

Players Our program enjoys strong university sponsorship and financial commitment. Program amenities include academic support  programs, team locker room, training/weight lifting facilities, charter buses, and much more.  The support from the university and dedication of our coaching staff has helped our program prepare student-athletes to succeed in life after college for over 20 years.

The Program prides itself in its ability to attract players from across the country.  Players are typically scouted or reviewed (by tape or DVD) and evaluated to determine where they could fit in our roster. Players may be scouted at showcases, tournaments, or league games throughout the season.  If one of our scouts/coaches sees a player that stands out and could possibly fit in with our team, they will typically meet with the player following the game.

Players can also initiate contact with our program by completing the recruit form. This will notify our coaches and scouts of your interest, and you will be contacted shortly afterward.  After completing the Recruit Form, you will receive information on the application process, financial aid, and upcoming campus visits.

We believe UMBC Ice Hockey provides the best balance between academics and athletics, and offers the infrastructure to enable our student-athletes to succeed.  We encourage you to review our Virtual Tour and to complete our recruit form.  We look forward to working with you!

Academic Support

Study Center

UMBC Ice Hockey provides the academic support system to help each student-athlete succeed.  Each player is proactively monitored by the staff and is required to utilize the Academic Monitoring Program(AMP).  AMP is modeled after the Varsity ACSA program.

The purpose of AMP is give Student Athletes an opportunity to succeed and to assist them along the way. It is designed to prevent a sudden realization that grades are suffering and the Student is suddenly at risk.  Some of the features include:

  • All new Student Athletes:  A minimum of 6 hours per week time in study hall (class room to be determined) but located in RAC. There will be set times and all Members must sign-in. It has wireless Internet.
  •
  • All Student Athletes who are deemed at Risk or near fail will require in addition to the above to seek out tutors to assist with their studies. These two requirements will be in effect until the required grade level and course load is achieved.
  •
  • At risk and New Student Athletes will provide test scores, homework assignments and  grades to coaching staff
  •
  • Changes to course loads are to be discussed with Staff and any advisor's.
