UMBC Club Sport Athlete of the Year

The 2008-2009  Lou Cantori Memorial UMBC Club Sport Athlete of the Year recipient is UMBC Ice Hockey’s #13, Drew Harcharik!

Congratulations to junior Drew Harcharik who received his second straight MACHA All-Star team selection and was awarded the ACHA Southeast All-Region 2nd Team last season. Drew ranks 3rd all-time in points per game for UMBC and won the distinguished MVP award in 2009. Last season he helped lead the Ice Dawgs to 3 championships: the 2009 MACHA Playoffs, the Navy Crabpot Tournament, and the NC State Canes Cup. He closed his freshman season with 65 points and sophomore season with 40 goals and 34 assists. This year Drew is Ice Hockey’s Vice President and leads the team with 17 points. He is currently ranked 1st in assists and 2nd in points in the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Hockey Association.

Harcharik, a graduate of Marcus High School outside of Dallas, Texas, is a two time "Dallas Morning News High School Hockey Player of the Year” who led his team in the 2006 Texas Cup State Championship and also played with the NAHL Wichita Falls Wildcats. During his hockey career Drew has won several MVP awards, has been a consistent top scorer, and still holds the single season and all-time scoring records in the AT&T Metroplex High School Hockey League.

We can expect big things from both Harcharik and the Ice Hockey team this season. Led by first year head coach Aaron Voegtli and captain Dana Becker, the team has already made their mark, crushing Monmouth and Lafayette 13-1 and 14-1 respectively. We look forward to watching them dominate the MACHA league this season and Regional playoffs in the spring. Congratulations again to Drew Harcharik!
