In order to win the MACH South last year UMBC had to go through Liberty; and in order to advance to Nationals UMBC had to go through Rowan. UMBC takes on each of those teams this weekend, and those were the last times the Retrievers met either. Championship quality hockey coming to Reisterstown in November.
UMBC and Liberty faced off against each other three times last year with UMBC winning all 3. UMBC won 4-1 in Reisterstown, 3-2 in OT in Lynchburg, then 3-2 again in the MACH South Final also played in Lynchburg. Liberty currently stands at 10-3-0, ranked #7 in the ACHA Southeast Region and atop the MACH South with a 4-1-0 record. The Flames play the night before against Temple in Philadelphia.
Rowan and UMBC met only twice last year the first matchup was a 4-1 victory on nuetral ice at the MACH Showcase, the second meeting came on day 2 of regionals last year with the winner moving on to play at nationals in Ft Myers. UMBC won that game 2-1 in OT on a Matt Bloom (Ellicott City, MD) goal. Rowan is currently undefeated at 10-0-0 and ranked #2 in the ACHA Southeast Region, and sits 4th in the MACH North after only 1 conference game played. The Profs face off vs Delaware in Newark Friday night.
Saturdays game is not scheduled to be broadcast but updates can be found @UMBCIceHockey on twitter, Sundays game can be heard at iymsportsradio.com with Tom Willms on the call.
