The UMBC Hockey team despite a mecurial start to the season, sits atop the MACH-South Standings. This weekend UMBC looks to cement their position, and avenge an earlier loss. A win over Delaware would keep UMBC on top of the standings, and a win over Montclair St would counteract the loss suffered at the hands of Montclair St on October 14.
The Delaware Blue Hens (6-3-0, 0-1-0) are in their first year as a member of the MACH South Division and 2nd year in the MACH overall. Their lone MACH-South game was a 5-3 loss to Virginia Tech, a team UMBC (4-5-0, 2-1-0) defeated 3-2 on October 13. UMBC and Delaware met twice last year, UMBC won the first game at home 10-4, and tied the second game 4-4 before prevailing in a shootout on the road. Sean O'Connor (Stony Point, NY) had 1 goal and 5 assists in the two games while Matt Bloom (Ellicott City, MD) had 2 goals and 3 assists to lead returning players. Jon Drago (Guttenberg, NJ) earned the win in the first game last year allowing one goal on 23 shots in 46 minutes of relief work.
The Montclair St Redhawks (3-2-1) defeated UMBC 7-5 on October 14. Jon Drago allowed 7 goals on 34 shots in the least effective outing of his career. Bloom led all Retrievers with 3 points in the contest while 5 different players tallied goals. The power play was 3 for 7 while the penalty kill was a perfect 5 for 5. UMBC has won the last two meeting between the two squads at Floyd Hall Arena, the most recent a 4-2 victory November 20, 2011.
