Before the game UMBC honored Seniors Dan Durantaye (Ellicott City, MD), Sean O'Connor (Stony Point, NY) and Nik Jost (Grosse Point Park, MI). After was the biggest game of the regular season. UMBC v Penn St, with the winner going to nationals with an automatic bid.
The game started out back and forth up and down the ice with chances for both sides. 8 minutes into the game the score was still scoreless, but UMBC would find themselves down two men on a 5 on 3 penalty kill. Penn St would score on a deflection in front on the 5 on 3, and then on a rebound during the 5 on 4. The goals were scored 48 seconds apart, and the game completely changed. From there Penn St would go on the offensive,hemming UMBC into their own zone for extended periods of time. Then with 4:27 left in the first period, while on a delayed penalty, Penn St converted once again making the score 3-0. The period ended the same way.
The Retrievers would refuse to roll over with Durantaye converting on a UMBC power play at the 5:41 mark of the first. He took a pass along the goal line and beat the Penn St goalie five-hole drawing UMBC within 2 at 3-1. UMBC would keep getting chances throughout the period to no avail. Then Penn St would respond just 2:20 before the intermission with a goal to restore the 3 goal lead heading into the third.
UMBC would keep getting chances in the third period but were unable to get a goal. Eventually the clock ran out and Penn St puched their ticket to St Louis, MO and ACHA Division 2 National Tournament. Jon Drago (Guttenburg, NJ) took the loss allowing 3 goals on 16 shots in 20 minutes of work. Trevor Miller (Macomb, MI) gave up one goal on 34 shots in relief.
