Assistant Coach Kurtz grew up and still lives in Philadelphia, PA. Kurtz began coaching at his alma mater, Father Judge High School, and discovered his love for coaching. He continued with the program for 7 years before moving into Junior hockey.
In 2006-07, Kurtz joined the Tri-State Selects Junior C team as an Assistant Coach. In a one-year turnaround, Kurtz helped lead a program that previously had a losing record to the Division Title and a spot in the USA Hockey Junior C National Championships. Kurtz left Tri-State after one season to accept the Head Coach position for the Philadelphia Jr. Patriots Junior C team. Again, Kurtz was able to help lead a turnaround, taking the Jr. Patriots to the playoffs one season after posting a losing record. The Jr. Patriots changed their name to the Jr. Blazers, and Kurtz took over the reigns as the Head Coach for the Junior B team. His team just missed the playoffs, but still finished with its best record in their three-year history.
Kurtz also has experience coaching in the Keystone State Games. He led the South Junior team to a bronze medal in the Division’s first year. In addition, he helps coach with the Delaware Valley Summer Selects, which is a summer tournament team out of Exton, PA for mites through bantams.
Kurtz works for the Department of Recreation in Philadelphia, and is eager to start working with the UMBC players and help take the team to new heights.
